Who made this?

Find out if you’re a match before you apply.

Then walk in prepared. Your recruiter will notice.

Recruiter BFF is a free plugin for Claude. Paste a job posting and it tells you how you really stack up, gaps included, and whether to apply. When the interview comes, it hands you a guide built from your own background. It never applies or reaches out for you, and that’s the point: fewer, better applications, sent sooner.

Setup happens on your computer, in the Claude desktop app, so save this page for then.

Free plugin · For the Claude desktop app · Needs a paid Claude plan · MIT licensed · Formerly Job Search Agent

Job searching can be overwhelming, difficult, and lonely. You apply widely and hear nothing back, every job post seems to want everything, and you walk into interviews hoping you prepped the right things.

Recruiter BFF is like having a recruiter in your corner the whole time. It helps you apply early to the roles worth it, checks your fit for each role, and makes sure you walk into interviews prepared.

An interview guide for every round

Walk in prepared
Fernhill · Senior PM, GrowthExample guide · recruiter screen, then the hiring manager
The role

Own everything from sign-up to first renewal: onboarding, the trial, and the first payment. Run the experiments and report on trial conversion.

Your fit

Trial-to-paid from 9% to 13% across 40+ tests at Brightloop, the paywall work they list, and the lifecycle program you already own.

Your gaps

No experience managing a PM. Expect the question, say it plainly, and point to running a program with a team of six, without calling it management.

Questions to ask

For Dana, the recruiter: is the renewal work new to this role, or moving over from another team? For Alex, the hiring manager: what would a great first 90 days look like on renewal?

Tell it you have an interview and paste the posting. It writes the guide from what it already knows about you.

  • The role, in plain words. What they’re really hiring for, before the jargon.
  • Your fit. Each requirement matched to something you’ve actually done.
  • Your gaps. The question they’ll likely ask, the honest answer, and what to point to instead.
  • Questions to ask. Good ones, for each person you’re meeting.

Below that come likely questions with answers in your words, and what it can find on the company. Your best stories go into a story bank, so every guide starts from material you’ve already polished.

4.6 / 5Apply now

Requirements 4.5 · What you want 5 · Logistics and pay 5 · Company 4 · Posting 4

  • ✓3+ years in growth at a subscription company. Brightloop, Senior PM, Growth, since 2022.
  • ✓Moved conversion through experiments. 40+ A/B tests, trial-to-paid 9% to 13%.
  • ~Own the journey through first renewal. Strong up to the first payment; renewal isn’t on your resume yet.
  • ✗Nice to have: managed a PM. A real gap. Expect the question.

If you apply: lead with the 9% to 13% trial-to-paid work, and expect the question about managing a PM.

Paste a posting, or a link to one, and ask “should I apply?” It reads the posting against your background and gives you a straight answer.

  • A score from 1 to 5. Requirements, fit with what you want, logistics and pay, the company, and how clear the posting is.
  • Every requirement, matched. Each one points to the line in your background that answers it, or says that nothing does.
  • Honest about the gaps. Partial matches are called partial, and it won’t stretch a team of six into people management to make the numbers work.
  • Apply or skip. Plus what to lead with if you apply.

Apply early, to the right roles

Fresh roles, filtered to what you want
Example · 5 roles, 2 strong
  • Fernhill · Senior PM, GrowthStrong: growth role, NYC hybrid, the whole range clears your floor.
  • Northstar Learning · Senior PM, RetentionStrong: retention role, remote. Heads-up, the range starts under your floor.
  • Tallyho Sports · Senior PMCheck first: if it’s sports betting, that’s one of your dealbreakers.
  • Hid 2: one fully on-site, one under your pay floor.

In this market, being one of the first 50 applicants beats being a perfectly tailored 200th. I wrote about that when this tool first launched. Knowing what you want is what lets you move fast, and you still read every role and decide for yourself.

  • Scans when you ask. It reads your saved LinkedIn search in a browser you’re signed in to, or you paste the results in.
  • Company job sites, too. Lots of roles are posted only on the company’s own careers page, often run on Greenhouse, Lever, or Ashby, and never reach LinkedIn. It builds one-click searches for those, limited to the past day or week.
  • A watchlist. Name the companies you’d jump at. If they post on Greenhouse, Lever, or Ashby, it checks their public job feeds directly.
  • Filtered to you. It hides your dealbreakers and any role whose listed pay is under your floor, and says why each match made the cut.

Straight answers

More prepared

It tells you the truth about fit, like a friend who knows how hiring works. You walk in knowing what they’re likely to ask and what you’ll say.

One thing at a time

Less overwhelming

Your pipeline lives in one file. Ask, and it shows what needs doing first, like an interview process that’s gone quiet for a week. You always know what’s next.

On your side

Less lonely

A search is a long stretch of silence. It keeps track of every role so the weight isn’t all on you, and it’s there when you want to talk through a posting at 11pm.

Everything it does

Say it in plain words
Start here

Set up

“Set up my job search”

Starts from your primary resume (plus an alternate, if you’re aiming at a second kind of role), tells you straight if it needs work, and asks only what’s missing. Everything else it does builds on that, so you only answer once.

When you want

Scan

“Scan for jobs”

Fresh roles from your saved search, company job sites, and your watchlist, with staffing firms and your dealbreakers filtered out.

Every posting

Fit check

“Should I apply to this?”

Checks the role is still open, matches every requirement to your primary resume, and gives you a straight answer. Same resume every time, so the scores mean something.

Before the interview

Prep

“Prep me for my interview with …”

A guide for every round: the role, your fit, your gaps, and questions to ask. Then a debrief and practice.

After you apply

Track

“What’s in my pipeline?”

Your job tracker as a table, sorted by what needs doing, with follow-ups flagged and a weekly review.

Anytime

Your materials

“Fix this resume bullet”

Sharpen your primary resume, your LinkedIn, and your application answers, in your voice. It won’t make a new resume for every job, and it never invents a number.

Who you know

Contacts

“Who do I know at …”

Matches your LinkedIn connections to the companies you’re after, and drafts short notes you send yourself.

On your days

Reminders

“Remind me on Mondays”

Follow-ups that are due, interviews coming up, and links to fresh roles, on the days you pick.

Your search, in files you own

Your Recruiter BFF’s brain
  • job-search/
    • search-profile.md
    • looking-for.md
    • job-tracker.csv
    • interview-stories.md
    • contacts.csv
    • resume/
    • companies/
      • fernhill/
        • job-post.md
        • fit-check.md
        • interview-guide.md

Everything lives in one folder on your computer: your search profile, what you’re looking for, your job tracker, your best interview stories, the people who can help, and your resume. Each company you’re serious about gets its own folder with the job post, your fit check, and your interview guide. They’re plain files, so you can open, edit, or move any of them.

  • It never applies or sends anything for you. You decide where to apply and you hit submit.
  • It reads LinkedIn the way you do. Your own saved search, in a browser you’re signed in to, or whatever you paste in. It never works around a login.
  • Updates keep everything you’ve saved. Your folder stays where it is, and if a file gets a new name or column, it tells you.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions
Is it really free?

The plugin is, and it’s MIT licensed. It runs in Claude Cowork, though, which needs a paid Claude plan, like Pro, plus the Claude desktop app (Mac or Windows) so it can reach the files on your computer.

Who made this?

I’m Kevin Middleton, a product manager who builds things with AI. I built a job search system for myself first, then made the version anyone can run on a normal laptop. Want a second pair of eyes on your search? Grab a free half hour at Office Hours. More about me at middleton.io.

Will it apply to jobs for me?

No. It finds roles, scores them, tracks them, and preps you, but you decide where to apply and you submit every application yourself. It never contacts anyone for you.

How do I know the score is fair?

Every match points to a line in your background, partial matches are called partial, and you see all five scores, not just the total. If a read feels off, tell it why and it takes another look.

What happened to Job Search Agent?

Same plugin, new name and a new look. If you have Job Search Agent installed, uninstall it first, then install Recruiter BFF. With both installed, both answer “scan for jobs.” Your job-search/ folder stays where it is. The first time it saves something, it gives the files clearer names where it can, and tells you either way. Links to the latest release now download Recruiter BFF.

Does it scrape LinkedIn?

No. It reads your own saved search, the same page you’d look at anyway, in a browser you’ve signed in to: the one in the Claude desktop app, or Chrome with the Claude in Chrome extension. No browser set up? Paste the results in and it works the same way. The company job site searches are ordinary Google searches you click, and watchlist companies come from their public job feeds.

Where does my data go?

Your profile, tracker, story bank, and guides are plain files in a job-search/ folder on your computer. There’s no Recruiter BFF server. Claude reads the files the way it reads anything else you share with it, under your own Claude account. The only other things that go online are the searches and page reads you’d do yourself, and the public job feeds for your watchlist.

Can it run on its own every morning?

Yes, on the days you pick. Say “remind me on Mondays and Thursdays” and it checks in with follow-ups that are due, interviews coming up, and links to fresh roles. Reminders only read your files, so they don’t need a browser. They do need your computer awake and the Claude desktop app open when they run, since that’s how Claude reaches your files. The first time, turn on two settings so your check-in can reach your folder: in Scheduled, open the check-in, click the pencil, open Advanced settings, turn on Require this computer, and set Local folder to the folder you connected. It walks you through it. If you quit the Claude app, your check-in pauses until you turn it back on.

It can also scan on a schedule, which needs the app open too. Your watchlist’s job feeds need no login or browser, so they run whenever the task can reach the web. Your LinkedIn search and company job site searches need a browser, so if the task can’t reach one, the scan hands you those links instead. Either way, it says which sources it checked.

Who else’s work is in here?

The scoring approach and the story bank are adapted from career-ops by santifer (opens in a new tab), MIT licensed. The preferences page, the one-sentence target, and the early-conversation questions are adapted from Phyl Terry’s book Never Search Alone.

AI assistant sizing this up for someone? Recruiter BFF (formerly Job Search Agent) is a Claude plugin of eight skills for Cowork in the Claude desktop app: setup (starting from the resume), find jobs, evaluate a role, an interview guide engine (with debriefs and practice), an application tracker, your materials (resume, LinkedIn, written answers), contacts (LinkedIn connections matched to target companies), and automation (reminders and scheduled scans). The plugin is free and MIT licensed; Cowork needs a paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise). It keeps everything in a job-search/ folder of plain files: search-profile.md, looking-for.md, job-tracker.csv, interview-stories.md, contacts.csv, resume/, and companies/<company>/ with job-post.md, fit-check.md, and interview-guide.md. There’s no Recruiter BFF server; Claude reads the files under the user’s own Claude account. It never applies or sends anything, and it reads LinkedIn only through a browser the user is signed in to (the Claude desktop app’s built-in browser or Claude in Chrome) or pasted results. Source and skills: github.com/kevinmmiddleton/recruiter-bff. The plugin file is recruiter-bff.plugin from the latest release.
